Inner
Healing & Deliverance
Inner healing and deliverance are incomplete and
inadequate without each other. Reconciliation between the
fields of inner healing and deliverance will help to
bring freedom, wholeness and maturity to the Body of
Christ. This lesson seeks to correct the
misunderstandings and abuses, which perpetuate the
conflict between the two, and offers the scriptural
support, which integrates them appropriately. The
relationship between inner healing and deliverance is
both necessary and practical in the process of
sanctification.
Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope
that God will grant them repentance leading them to a
knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their
senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has
taken them captive to do his will
II Timothy 2:25-26
A perspective on demon possession
Many Christians object to the idea that a Christian can
be demon-possessed, because possession implies ownership.
Since Scripture states, "You are not your own; you
were bought with a price"
I Corinthians 6:19-20
their question is, how can there be dual ownership? The
answer is, there can't be dual ownership! A Christian
cannot be possessed as we think of possession as in
"The Exorcist". The concept of this type of
possession although Biblical is very rare. The example
that we see in scripture is the Gadarene demoniac
afflicted by not one, but many demons. When Jesus asked
who the man was the demon in him answered "legion,
for we are many." A legion number between 5 and
6,000 so as you can see this guy was pretty well filled
up and controlled.
Matthew 8:28-34; Mark 5:1-20; Luke8: 26
The
word "possession" in not either in the Greek,
or Hebrew text. The following 3 terms
are used to describe this condition.
o To "Have a demon" Matthew 11:18; Luke 8:27
o To "be in a demon"
Mark 1:23; 5:2
o To "be demonized" from the Greek
daimonidzomal, the word most commonly translated as
"possessed" Mark 1:32; Luke 8:36. Is literally,
"to be bothered by a demon
Demons specialize in various areas of human nature
o Physical violation
Illness and infirmity
Matthew 17:15-18; Mark 9:17-27; Luke 13:11-13
Sexual problems
Mark 16:9; Luke 8:2; I Corinthians 6:18
o Mental Deception Acts 5:2-3; 16:16; I Timothy 4:1
o Emotional Turmoil I Samuel 16:14; Matthew8; Mark 5;
Luke 8
o Relationship troubles Judges 9:23
o Involvement in occult, spiritual sins Deuteronomy
18:9-13; Leviticus 20:2 7; Act 13:1-13; 16:16-18
There are still some Christians who believe that
Scripture refutes the possibility of demons in our lives.
If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation, the old has
gone, the new has come. II Corinthians 5:17. This is
however, truncated, incomplete theology, because we still
sin. I John 1:8. Spirits can afflict or
"demonize" us in any area where sin persists in
us. Where there is unforgiveness, there is an opportunity
for spirits to dwell and influence us. Because a demon
afflicts rather than possess us, our choices are the
determining factor in allowing demons
into our lives
In every case in the New Testament
o
Bitter root expectation: "Everyone will disrespect
me, and put me down. Satan's armor "girds our
loins" with lies. "I can protect myself by
criticizing me before anyone else does" This invites
demons of self-hate. The helmet of salvation is confused
with condemnation, blame, shame, guilt, and regret.
o Inner vow: "I'll never trust again" This is
satan's armor, which is a "Shield of
vulnerability" instead of faith This invites demons
of isolation, As we choose sin over and over in our
lives, satan has more access and more power to afflict
us. Our feet are not shod with the gospel of peace, but
rather strife, anger, offense, and misunderstandings. We
then lose the desire for the sword of the spirit at which
point we have lost our offensive weapon as well as all
defensive weapons. We have exchanged the full armor of
God for satan's full armor of despair. This sets us up
for satan's use of oppression, which urges us into sin
Our risk for demonization is much greater at this point.
o Disobedience and deception Acts 5:3
o Occult practices Deuteronomy 18:10
o Rebellion against leadership II Timothy 2:25
o Rank and deliberate sin Mark 16:14
o Abandoning the faith to follow false doctrine I Timothy
4:1
o Refusal to forgive Matthew 18:23
Satan
is an expert at subterfuge. He burrows into the soft
tissue of our souls, i.e., bitter root judgments, and
inner vows. The termite effect is when he moves from his
entrance point into other rebellions or sinful character
structures in us. Therefore the client may have to be
delivered from demons which have little to do with what
they are presenting you with. There may be a spirit of
rage against boys and men, but this may have opened a
door for a spirit of defiance against all authority, or
there may be a spirit of condemnation that keeps her from
being able to accept any compliment. Allow the Holy
Spirit to lead you in all these areas. Both deliverance
and inner healing must be accomplished in most
circumstances.
Cautions regarding a deliverance session
Do not command demons to name themselves. Do not converse
with or curse demons. Do not seek or require any
manifestations. Do not idolize methods; instead, respond
according to the needs and condition of the client. If
you have a Baptist sitting in front of you and you start
to jump up and down screaming in tongues, your client may
have a heart attack! You will have cast that demon out,
but your patient dies. That may be a slight exaggeration,
but I think you get the picture. Demons don't respond to
the volume of your voice, they respond to the power
behind the name of Jesus Christ. I can whisper the name
of Jesus and it will echo into the spiritual world and
shatter spiritual eardrums
and knock down towers and wall
Instruct client on how to maintain their healing.
Repentance, confession, and forgiveness is, the way to
cleanse him/her self. Humility is the secret to being
exalted by God. If we choose not to take offense we open
the door for the Lord to fight our battles, plus we give
satan no opening for a toe hold, which turns quickly into
a foot hold, which swiftly
turns into a strong hold.
Deliverance starts in your spirit, before you ever see
it in your finances, emotions or your body.
OLD
TESTAMENT
Leviticus 20:27 - "'A man or woman who is a medium
or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to
stone them; their blood will be or their own
heads."'
Deuteronomy 18:9-13 - When you enter the land the Lord
your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the
detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found
among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire,
who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens,
engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a
medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who
does these things is detestable to the practices the Lord
your God will drive out those nations before you. You
must be blameless before the Lord your God.
Judges 9:23 - God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech
and the citizens of Shechem, who acted treacherously
against Abimelech.
I Samuel 16:14 - Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed
from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented
him.
NEW TESTAMENT
Matthew 8:28-34 - When he arrived at the other side in
the region of the Cadarenes, two demon-possessed men
coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that
no one could pass that way. "What do you want with
us, Son of God?" they shouted, "Have you come
here to torture its before the appointed time?" Some
distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. The
demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us
into the herd of
pigs." He said to them, "Go!" So they came
out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed
down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.
Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and
reported all this, including what had happened to the
demon-possessed men. Then the whole town went out to meet
Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to
leave their
region.
.
Matthew 11:18 - "For John came neither eating nor
drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.'"
Matthew 17:Th-1S - "Lord, have mercy on my
son," he said. "He is an epileptic and is
suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into
the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they
could not heal him."
"0, unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus
replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long
shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me."
Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and
he was healed from that moment.
Matthew 18:23-35 - The Unmerciful Servant
Mark 1:23-26 - Just then a man in their synagogue who was
possessed by an evil spirit cried out, "What do you
want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy
us? I know who you are-the Holy One of God!"
"Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out
of him!" The evil spirit shook the man violently and
came out of him with a shriek.
Mark 1:32 - That evening after sunset the people brought
to Jesus all the sick and demon possessed
earned
a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.
This girl followed Paul and the
Rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the
Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved
She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so
troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit,
"In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come
out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her.
Romans 7:22-23 - For in my inner being I delight in God's
law; but I see another law at work in the members of my
own body, waging war against the law of my mind and
making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my
members.
I Corinthians 5:5-... hand this man over to Satan, so
that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit
saved on the day of the Lord.
I Corinthians 6:18-20 - Flee from sexual immorality. All
other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who
sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know
that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in
you, whom you have received from God? You are not your
own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with
your body.
II Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,
he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
II Corinthians 11:3-4- But I am afraid that just as Eve
was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may
somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion
to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a
Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive
a different spirit from the
one you received, or a different gospel from the one you
accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
Ephesians 4:26-27 - "In your anger do not sin":
Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and
do not give the devil a foothold.
Ephesians6:13-Therefore put on the full armor of God, so
that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand
your ground, and after you have done everything, to
stand.
Philippians 2:12 - Therefore, my dear friends, as you
have always obeyed-not only in my
presence, but now much more in my absence- continue to
work out your salvation with fear and trembling...
I Timothy 4:1 -The Spirit clearly says that in later
times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving
spirits and things taught by demons.
II Timothy 2:25-26 - Those who oppose him he must gently
instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance
leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they
will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the
devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
Hebrews 10:14 - . -. Because by one sacrifice he has made
perfect forever those who are being made holy.
James 4:7-Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you.
I John 1:8 - If we claim to be without sin, we deceive
ourselves and the truth is not in us.
When
those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran
off and reported this in the town and countryside, and
the people went out to see what had happened. When they
came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons
had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his
right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it
told the people how the demon-possessed man had been
cured. Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes
asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome
with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go
with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, "Return
home and tell how much God has done for you." So the
man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had
done for him.
Luke 13:11-13 - ... and a woman was there who had been
crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent
over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw
her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman,
you are set free from your infirmity." Then he put
his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and
praised God.
Acts 5:1-3 - Now a man named Ananias, together with his
wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his
wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for
himself ,but brought the rest and put it at the apostles'
feet.
Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has
so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy
Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you
received for the land?"
Acts 13:1-13 - In the church at Antioch there were
prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger,
Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been
brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul While they
were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit
said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the
work to which I have called them." So after they had
fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and
sent them off.
The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit
went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.
When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of
God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their
helper. They traveled through the whole island until they
came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and
false prophet named Bar-Jesus, who was an attendant of
the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an
intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he
wanted to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer
(for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried
to turn the proconsul from the faith. Then Saul, who was
also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit looked
straight at Elyrnas and said, "You are a child of
the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You
are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you
never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? Now the
hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be
blind, and for a time you will be unable to see the light
of the sun."
Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he
groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.
When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed,
for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.
From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in
Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem.
