And the Lord said, Let there be......and there was!

Generational Sin

Sometimes we will exhaust every avenue of personal sin in a client, only to find great trouble still besetting the person's life and family.
The trouble may originate from causes outside a person's own guilt or sin nature, descending instead through family lines,
We call this generational sin.

Sin and trouble passing from generation to generation is a continual theme throughout the Old Testament.
In this lesson we will study the three ways in which we may come under the defilement of generational sin.
We may inherit our propensities to sin through our genes, through example, and through the law of judgment (sowing and reaping).

By the authority given us in Christ Jesus, we are able to break the bonds of generational sin. Through prayer we can help to free families from its patterns of destruction.

for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation...Deuteronomy 5:9

Generational Sin is the effect and consequences of sin on subsequent generations.

Is it possible to inherit sin? Some Christians say no. They argue that Jesus' death on the cross frees us from the problem of inherited trouble, but yet we clearly inherit blessings down from our forefathers,
such as a strong gene pool, good health, longevity,
good temperament, gifts, and talents.
The benefits of civilization are inventions, sound investments,
and wise decisions.
The Lord does say that each one will die for his own iniquity and without cause a curse cannot alight.
Ezekiel 18; Jeremiah 31:29-30; Proverbs 26:2.
We also know that, in Gethsemane, Jesus took upon Himself the sins of humanity past, present, and future; nonetheless, our healing still requires confession, forgiveness and repentance~

We minister to many Christians who suffer generational effects.
It may be due to sins that are hiding or ancestral bloodlines that have been polluted by un-confessed sin. Like much of our walk with God, being freed from generational sin is a process.

Is it fair? The laws of God operating in the universe are neither personal nor punitive; they simply state how things work. Sowing and reaping allow for good as well as evil.

There are three ways by which we can reap blessing or harm through what is son by our forefathers:

1. Through genetic inheritance, our DNA binds us physically and chemically to our forefathers. We inherit physical traits, illnesses passed through the genes, such as diabetes, hemophilia, even death itself was passed down from Adam as a consequence of his sin Romans 5:12.

o The conflicts of the nations through history, such as Ishmael and Isaac, seeds of the Arab and Jewish nations.

o The blessings of God, as when Levi is credited with paying tithes to Melchizedek. Hebrews 7:5-10

2. Through example or modeling it is well documented that environment helps mold behavior. Anger teaches anger, and resentment teaches resentment. What we see in the family is written on our hearts.

3. Through the laws of God we find sowing and reaping.

o "Therefore you are without excuse, every man of you who passes judgment, for in that you judge another, you condemn yourselves for you who judge practice the same things. "Romans 2:1 NAS

o "Do not judge and criticize and condemn others, so that you may not be judged criticized and condemned yourselves. For just as you judge criticize and condemn others, you will be judged criticized and condemned, and in accordance with the measure you use to deal out to others, it will be dealt out to you." Matthew 7:1,2 Amp.

o "So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them, for this is the law and the prophets." Matthew 7:12

o The reverse of the golden rule is: "You will do to others what has been done to you.,,

o The law of sowing and reaping existed before sin. "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows,
this he will also reap.

Some examples of common patterns of generational sins are:

o Women molested by fathers

o Generations of alcoholism

o Tragic illness and premature death

o Multiple miscarriages/closed womb

o Financial and business failure

o Occult involvement

The sin of occultism can be especially damaging some symptoms may include:

o Curses on family Deuteronomy 28:15 and following

o Unaccountable financial reverses

o Affliction through diseases which refuse diagnosis and /or treatment and recurring ailments

o Family feuds and unresolved conflicts

o There is a tendency to be drawn to the occult, even without knowing it; forms of prayer, visualization, and so-called Christian cults.

How to bring healing from generational sin

o Cherish your heritage. If you are embarrassed or angry about your heritage this becomes spiritual rebellion.

o Recognition is to see and name a thing, and when you do, you gain power over it. As you ask family history questions, look for patterns i.e., incest, poverty, and illnesses through the generations. One or two incidents do not make a pattern, however three or four should get your attention. Ask the Hoiy Spirit to show you.

o Confession: lead the client to confess the truth of the situation and acknowledge participation in the sin.

o Repentance: The Bible says a righteous son will not inherit the tither's iniquity. Jeremiah 31:29-30; Ezekiel 18:17. It also says that no one is righteous Psalm 14 Romans 3:10-18 thus we must depend on the cross to stop the trouble. Repent for your ancestors and your self

o Forgiveness: We have the client forgive his/her ancestors and ask forgiveness for any participation that he/she has had in any generational sins, curses, diseases, or spiritual assignments. Pronounce Christ's forgiveness over him/her.

o Prayer: Place the cross between generations so the sins of the ancestors are stopped there; claim and believe this. Pray about each descending pattern i.e., divorce, cancer, alcoholism, homosexuality, etc. Reckon these things as dead on the cross. Proverbs 20:7; 13:22, Psalms 103:17-18; Isaiah 54:13

When there has been occult involvement pray a "hiding prayer." Although our lives are normally "hidden in Christ," Colossians 3:3 occult involvement exposes us to the sight of the enemy. Pray for release by destruction "The Son of God appeared for this purpose, that He might destroy the works of the devil "I John 3:8

Ask God to cast away any powers of darkness, such as familiar spirits and bring holy angels to protect the family. Hebrews 1:14

Celebrate that God has blessed this family and give Him the praise and the glory. Recommended reading for this lesson...
Healing the Wounded Spirit: Chapter 13
(by John and Paula Stanford)

OLD TESTAMENT

Exodus 20:5 - 'You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.

Exodus 34:7 - .."Maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.'

Leviticus 26:39 -"'Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of
their sins; also because of their father's sins they will waste away.
Numbers 14:18-"'The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion, Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sins of the fathers to the third and fourth generation''

Numbers 14:33 - "Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithful-ness, until the last of your bodies lies in the desert.''

Deuteronomy 5:9 MV - "Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me."

NEW TESTAMENT

Matthew 7:12 - "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."

Romans 2:1 - You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at what-ever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment
do the same things.

Romans 2:4-7 - Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance? But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. God "will give to each person according to what he has done." To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality,
he will give eternal life.

Romans 3:10-18 - As it is written:
"There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.
All have turned away, they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good, not even one."
"Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit." "The poison of vipers is on their lips."
"Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."
"Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know."
"There is no fear of God before their eyes."

Romans 6:12--Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.
Romans 122 - Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:12 - Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Galatians 6:7 - Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

Ephesians 6:18 - And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always

keep on praying for all the saints.

Colossians 3:3 - For you died, and your life is now
hidden with Christ in God.

Hebrews 1:14 - Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

James 5:13-20 - Is any one of you i.n trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.
Is any one of you sick?
He should call the elders of the church to pray over hhn and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well;
the Lord will raise him up.
If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
Therefore confess your sins to each other
and pray for each other so that you maybe healed.
The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective
Elijah was a man just like us.
He prayed earnestly that it would not rain,
and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
Again he prayed.
and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth
and someone should bring him back,
remember this:
Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

1 John 3:8b - The reason the Son of God appeared

was to destroy the devil's work.
